| Playing catch-up with some Blizzard news while patching WoW to version 2.4.2, I noticed something everyone else must have known about since two days ago: BlizzCon 2008 was announced this week, "now with 50% more hall space for your convention-going enjoyment". This will be the third edition of Blizzard's gaming convention, and for those interested in attending, the venue and dates are Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, on October 10-11. Tickets will go on sale in the next few weeks, priced at $100 per person. "BlizzCon will offer a wide variety of activities to help all attendees get the most out of the two-day event. In addition to serving as a gathering place for the different Blizzard Entertainment gaming communities, attendees will be able to enjoy:
- Hands-on play time with upcoming Blizzard Entertainment releases - Discussion panels with Blizzard Entertainment developers - Competitive and casual tournaments for players to showcase their talents - Areas and activities devoted to licensed products such as the World of Warcraft - Trading Card Game - Costume, machinima, and character sound-alike contests with great prizes - Commemorative merchandise based on the Blizzard Entertainment franchises - A silent auction - More exciting activities to be announced" The press release isn't hinting at any new game announcements during the event, but you never know...
Sure enough, Nintendo was among those who tried to leave their mark on this week's GDC 2008 event in San Francisco. That's not to say they actually succeeded, but at least they announced / confirmed a new round of release dates for some of their upcoming products - namely WiiWare, Wii Fit and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. First come, first served is Super Smash Bros. Brawl, set to kick into retail action on March 9. I don't think this Wii fighting game needs any more introduction, but just in case I'm wrong, these few trailers should enlighten you in no time. Next, on May 12, comes WiiWare - the new game download service that got us (or at least myself) marginally excited. One of the early games developed for WiiWare we already mentioned in our previous news about LostWinds; another notable one will be Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King by Square Enix; and a new episodic game series from Telltale is also on its way. Finally, Wii Fit will be released on May 19, complete with a "weight-and-motion-sensing Wii Balance Board" which may or may not prove useful for other kinds of games. Like... skiing? Just a thought. Wii jokes just ain't what they used to be...The horror... the horror... Microsoft sure got off to an embarrassing start at GDC 2008, where one of their Xbox 360 consoles was viciously killed by the dreaded "Red Ring of Death" - as witnessed and filmed by a BBC technology editor haunting the conference halls in search for victims. "On Microsoft's own stand at the show one of the demo consoles has a rather familiar problem - the red ring of death. There's no way of knowing if this particular console was manufactured before or after Microsoft identified the problems with the machines. But at the very least it's embarrassing for the company that its own stock of demo machines are still susceptible to the problem." Ironically, this is happening just several days after Microsoft desperately tried to combat that report about its consoles failing at a rate of 16%. Well, good luck with that now! Ah, the distinguished Game Developers Conference... now there's an event we won't be attending (although we might hold a prolongued "editorial" meeting at the local pub tonight). But no worries, that's why we have the internets, to bring us various stuff from this week's GDC 2008 in San Francisco. Such is this new pack of screenshots from Age of Conan issued by Funcom. I'd rather not comment on them, though - we might lose our last two Conan-fans readers who drive our earnings through the roof. (...) Continue reading 'GDC 2008 - Age of Conan Screenshots'... |
