In what we may call “the smartest move they have made in the recent years”, Ubisoft decided to cancel the production of its video game based on Heroes, NBC Universal's television series featuring several retards with super-powers, running mindlessly and lacking any acting capabilities.

According to the big-time publisher, the rights for the game, which was announced last summer for PC and next gen consoles, are now safely back in the hands of NBC, hopefully never to return to our poor and innocent gaming universe. Ubisoft's ex-big plans regarding this also included Tim Kring, the TV series' creator, and Jesse Alexander, co-executive producer. Sadly for poor ol' Jess, he recently got fired from the show, because he probably sucks big time.

With infinite kindness, the girls at Steam are now accepting preorders for the very much anticipated Far Cry 2 and, to convince their customers even further into buying the game, the whole package comes with an amazing 5 USD discount. Just the right amount of money to buy that Bentley you have always dreamed of.

Alongside this, Steam is also swiftly delivering copies of Xpand Rally Xtreme, plus an updated version of their client, just to make people a little fuzzy inside. Far Cry 2 will ship on October 22.
And here are the new Assassin's Creed PC screenshots we mentioned in last night's checkpoint, without any distracting logo. Below them you'll also find a new Q&A about the game's PC version, this time issued directly by Ubisoft.

The game is being released four months after the console versions. How did you use this extra development time?

Based on the feedback we got after the release of the console versions, we decided to add even more variety by developing a total of 4 new investigation types (Archer assassination, rooftop race challenge, merchant stand destruction challenge and escort challenge). The archer assassination requires the player to assassinate the archers in a dedicated zone without being seen. In the rooftop race challenge, the player will meet an informer and will have a set amount of time to reach a second informer. In the merchant stand destruction, some merchants have ties to the assassination target and their activities must be stopped by Altaïr. Finally, in the escort challenge, the player needs to securely escort a fellow Assassin from point A to point B.

Will the game exploit DX9 and DX10? (...)

This game was supposed to be released last year, if I recall correctly. Nevertheless, due to all kinds of delays, publicity stunts, or producer inability, Haze got postponed multiple times, and Ubisoft has vouched that we will see this PS3 (still) exclusive first-person shooter in May. This year. Probably.

Well, the truth is Haze promises great things, amongst which, sadly, free oral sex from any female character in-game is not included. Trailers are plenty, screenshots are plenty, Hell, you can find seldom previews here and there, some that are actually not licking Ubisoft’s or Free Radical’s ass.

While the game is still PS3 exclusive, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a PC or X360 “port” coming next year.
We already know that EA was desperately trying to get its sticky hands on Take-Two, in this endless attempt to take over the world and infest it with American bunnies. As a result, other big publishers like Ubisoft are practically forced to react, one way or the other – after all, lately, the whole fucking gaming world has been narrowed down to just a bunch of big companies, acquiring anything they possibly can.

Ubisoft was, as we recall, targeted by EA’s conquering grasp not long ago, in an attempt for a “hostile” takeover, but somehow managed to survive. Now, as a response to EA’s not-so-generous offer towards Take-Two, Yves Guillemont stated that his company is aiming to purchase as many game licenses as their budget allows.

"The desire of EA to buy Take Two pushes us to go faster, to accelerate internal growth but also to look at acquisition opportunities."

Ah, well, good luck to them. Forbes scoop.
Ok, so Assassin’s Creed may have rocked some people’s worlds, but it’s sure as hell it didn’t rock my PC just yet. The incoming computer version, which *should* be up and running at the end of March, is said to use tons of DirectX 10 features, according to Charles Beauchemin, Ubisoft’s Technical Lead.

Even so, we won’t be seeing any visual difference between DirectX 10, DirectX 9, or any other X, be it direct or indirect, for that matter. The game only uses Shader Model 4 to provide us with increased performance. In other words, it goes something like this:
Charles Beauchemin: DirectX 10 enables us to make fewer calls to the API to perform the same actions. Therefore, it will be possible for the drivers to make optimizations making the game faster without any change to the game engine. Since most of the DX10 drivers are still young, we can expect a lot of gain to come from the optimization of these drivers.

The whole story.
Ubisoft sends along word that they will open a new internal development studio - their 18th, no less - over in Singapore. That's one step closer to Japan, so... ganbatte, Ubi-kun! The local technological infrastructure, thriving game-dev industry and friendly government were among the factors that favoured this decision, and I suspect so were other local delights (good food, hot chicks... again, not quite Japanese, but hopefully they'll get there, too).

The new Singapore studio will be located in Fusionopolis, "a state-of-the-art infocomms & media hub that is still under construction", and it should open for business early this summer. By the time it reaches its peak (years from now), the new team should become 300-people strong, under the training of an initial core team of Ubi veterans.

The boss? Olivier de Rotalier, currently the Director of Cost Control for Ubi's International Production studios. The goal? To develop titles for portable and home consoles.
